Treatment for fear of the Dentist

A fear of the dentist affects one in four people, but there are ways to help you control your anxiety.

A survey by the British Dental Association found that 25%  of people feared visiting the dentist.  “Some people will blame the cost, because it’s easier than saying you’re frightened” says Dr Carole Boyle, a specialist in sedation and special care dentistry at King’s College London.

Just like other types of anxiety, anxiety degrees vary in the fear of dentist.  Perhaps you’ve someone has told you their horror stories at the dentist.

Your fear of Dentists could be combined with other fears such as fear of :-

needles,  becoming sick,  smells, etc.

The key to being relatively calm in the dentist's chair begins well before your actual visit.

Some of the reasons behind the fear:

  • Bad childhood experiences
  • Fear of needles
  • White coat syndrome
  • Fear of anaesthetic
  • The dentist’s drill
  • Lack of control
  • Feeling vulnerable
  • Invasion of personal space

Hypnotherapy is one successful way of dealing with this type of phobia, it’s a technique used with other phobias, such as spiders or snakes, etc..

Ultimately, the aim of dental hypnotherapy is rehabilitation, we treat people so that they get back into the system of dentistry and have no further fear.
